Update #1

Alright, here I am to finally provide an update on whats happening with The Pilot. Progress is happening!

What’s been accomplished

The game systems like inventory, fabrication, looting, and slotting ship components and mods are in place and working correctly. These were HUGE systems that need to work together and it was a pretty significant undertaking. We have also finished work on things like asteroids and mining. Most damage effects, external and player view, are in place and working.

What we are working on currently

Currently, we are working on the NPC ai which includes navigation, tasks, combat and decision making abilities. As part of this, we have a behavior system that allows us to create different ‘personalities’ for NPCs. At present, the behaviors are pretty simplistic, once we have the individual components finished and polished we will be able to create complex NPCs that feel more alive, with their own goals thought process. This is the exciting par

What’s next?

We have alot left to add. Mostly likely, the next step will be the mission system as it ties into the groundwork we’ve already laid so far. More on that next time!

Welcome to the Dev Blog!

Alright, intrepid spacefarers and game aficionados, welcome to the official dev log for the latest cosmic endeavor! If you’re reading this, I’ve successfully navigated the treacherous asteroid field that is my free time. Seriously, finding a moment to actually post here feels like hitting the lottery, so please accept my preemptive apologies for any radio silence. Blame it on the gravity wells of life, the demands of cosmic creation, or perhaps just the sheer number of snacks required to fuel (mostly) solo development.

I’m incredibly excited to finally be ready to share the view from the cockpit with you.

So, What is This Game All About, You Ask?

This is a single-player top-down space shooter that aims to give you the keys to your own personal galaxy. Forget strict linear paths; here, you’re the master of your destiny. Want to rack up credits as a trader? Pursue dangerous bounties? Or simply chart new sectors as an explorer? The universe is your space oyster, brimming with endless stories and adventures as you level up your skills and ship. There’s no end goal, just a vast galaxy to explore and your own path to forge.

And here’s a neat twist: while you’ll be flying solo, you won’t be entirely alone. We’ve got some cool, subtle online elements where characters from other players’ games can appear in your universe as NPCs – think independent traders, rival pilots, or quirky quest-givers. It adds a dynamic, living feel to the galaxy without the need for direct, real-time multiplayer.

Go Offline, No Worries!

One more important note: being online is not required to play! You can absolutely enjoy this game completely offline. You’ll still get the full single-player experience, just without the unique appearances of other players’ characters in your universe. It’s totally up to you how you want to explore the cosmos.

This blog is where I’ll be dropping updates, insights, and maybe a few musings on the existential dread of debugging. If you have questions or just want to say hi, feel free to reach out via the contact form on this site or find me on Discord! Thanks for joining me on this journey through the stars!
